Meta Introduces Lockdown-Style WhatsApp Mode to Protect High-Risk Users and Journalists
Meta has launched a new privacy-focused feature on WhatsApp called Strict Account Settings, aimed at providing “extreme safeguards against rare and highly sophisticated cyber attacks.” The update targets users at high risk, including journalists and public-facing figures.
The feature from Meta restricts users from receiving media content from non-contacts, while it blocks all incoming calls and disables group addition functions to establish a complete lockdown system for secure messaging.
How Strict Account Settings Protect Users
WhatsApp explained that this feature enables extreme protection that should only be used if the user feels at risk. Attachments and media from unknown contacts are blocked, link previews are disabled, and the platform limits who can call or add the user to a group. “Most people do not need this level of protection. This will reduce the quality of your messaging experience and calls,” Meta warned in a blog post.
Comparisons with Other Platforms’ Security Modes
Meta's decision parallels the actions taken by other technology companies. Apple introduced its Lockdown Mode in 2022 for digital threats. Android introduced its Advanced Protection Mode to safeguard devices from cyber attacks.
Meta highlighted that it uses the Rust programming language to protect photos, videos, and messages from spyware.
Steps to Enable Strict Account Settings
Users must update WhatsApp to its most recent version to access the mode, which requires them to go to Settings, select Privacy, and then Advanced, and tap on Strict Account Settings.
They need to create a 6-digit PIN and agree to the terms and conditions to turn on the feature. Meta emphasizes that the mode is optional and designed for individuals who require maximum security.
Enhancing Safety While Balancing Usability
WhatsApp uses Strict Account Settings to protect individuals from cybersecurity threats. Meta's decision to add extreme protection modes for Apple and Android devices demonstrates how companies are developing solutions to protect their most vulnerable customers.
The feature provides a practical way to stay safer online without completely stepping away from the platform.
