Sashi Tharoor answers son’s curveball with evidence linking Pakistan to Pahalgam terror
In a light but unexpected moment during an all-party delegation visit to America, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor answered a blunt question from his son, Ishaan Tharoor, on Pakistan’s reported complicity in the Pahalgam terror attack.
Tharoor, who is heading the delegation, seized the moment to introduce what he referred to as ‘three concrete pieces of evidence’ that implicate Pakistan in the April 22 murderous Pahalgam attack that left 26 dead, most of them tourists.
Son’s Surprising Question Hogs Limelight
In a public forum filled with foreign policy commentators and diplomats, Ishaan Tharoor, The Washington Post’s global affairs columnist, rose to welcome his father and ask a question in a personal capacity. Following some chuckles and jokes, he asked if any foreign governments had requested India to provide evidence of Pakistan’s involvement in the Pahalgam attack, and how India was reacting to Islamabad’s repeated denials.
“I’m extremely happy you brought this up, Ishaan. I did not grow it, I assure you,” Tharoor joked before offering a serious response.
No Foreign Government Misgivings, But Media Queries Continue
Tharoor explained that although media organizations had questioned India’s claims, no government interlocutors had asked for proof throughout the tour of the delegation.
“Very straightforward, no one had any doubt, and we were not requested for evidence,” he said, going on, “India is not such a country that would launch a military operation without a strong foundation.”
Reason 1: History of Denials and Osama Bin Laden Factor
Tharoor referred to Pakistan’s long history of supporting terror but denying involvement in public.
“Americans haven’t forgotten that Osama bin Laden was discovered living alongside an army camp in Pakistan,” he reminded, citing identical denials at the time of the 2008 Mumbai attacks, when Pakistani citizen Ajmal Kasab was taken alive and identified.
Reason 2: Prompt Claim by Proxy Group
He referred to the Resistance Front (TRF), a Lashkar-e-Taiba proxy, which issued the claim for the Pahalgam attack within 45 minutes.
“The outfit is a UN-sanctioned and US-listed banned group. Their prompt tweet, since removed, was a smoking gun,” Tharoor claimed. He further stated that India had made submissions to the UN Security Council’s 1267 Committee in 2023 and 2024.
Reason 3: Terrorist Funerals in Pakistan
Tharoor’s final point referred to the aftermath of India’s retaliatory Operation Sindoor on May 7, which targeted terror camps in Pakistan and PoK.
“Funerals were held for terrorists from Jaish-e-Mohammad and Lashkar-e-Taiba, with Pakistani military officials in attendance. That speaks volumes,” he said.
Tharoor’s Powerful Message
The Congress MP concluded by reiterating that India had acted with restraint until it had ‘convincing evidence’ and would not have launched Operation Sindoor otherwise. With a posited yet forceful reply, he converted a very personal moment into a clear diplomatic assertion.
With historical facts, intelligence, and visible consequences, the soft-spoken Tharoor highlighted India’s cautious approach and sinister response through Operation Sindoor. The origin of a father-son exchange, albeit unusual, was to reiterate the truth positioned by India: accountability and confidence rising in facing terrorism at the global level.
