Tesla’s Indian Footprint: Showroom Secured with High-Value Rent

Elon Musk’s Tesla is all set to launch its first showroom in India and it’s the biggest buzz in the Indian EV market right now.

The showroom is said to be located at the costliest commercial real estate, BKC (Bandra Kurla Complex) in Mumbai, Maharashtra, at a whopping rent of ₹35 lakh per month. The showroom covers a total of 4,000 square feet on the ground floor, and the deal is finalized at ₹900 per square foot.  The company is going to introduce imported EVs (electric vehicles), with prices starting at ₹21 lakh.

The first showroom is set to open in April at the earliest. Musk clarified that these retail outlets wouldn’t be their service centers. Tesla has also signed up for a 5-year lease for its first showroom in BKC. The showroom also includes a parking space.

Did PM Narendra Modi help Elon Musk

Elon Musk has been looking to enter the Indian market for quite some time; now it seems like the plan has been executed with the help of the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, when he met Elon Musk on an official trip to the US.

Since PM returned to India after his official trip to the US, Tesla has opened 13 job openings in Mumbai and Pune. Reportedly, Tesla is also planning to open another showroom in New Delhi’s Aerocity, one of the prime locations near the Indira Gandhi International Airport.

Following PM Modi’s visit to the US, India has slashed all the import duties on premium EVs priced above US $35,000 from 110% to as low as 15%. The Tesla Model 3 will cost around ₹35-40 lakhs in India, including all the RTO and insurance charges, according to the CSLA reports.

The Tesla models are priced almost 20–25% higher than other EVs sold in the Indian market, including the Mahindra E-Vitara. It is unlikely to disrupt the Indian market.

Tesla plans to import vehicles from its facility in Berlin, Germany, to India, with the Model S and Model 3 set to enter the market. The estimated price for these cars will not exceed $25,000, and they are expected to be available by November 2026.

In the meantime, reactions on the internet have emerged, with some users expressing skepticism. One user remarked, “Tesla will hardly sell a few thousand cars as the market will soon be flooded with cheaper Chinese electric cars.” Another user commented, There are no roads in Mumbai, and they are launching Tesla
