NCP Succession Crisis: Can Sunetra Pawar Bridge the Leadership Void in Maharashtra?
The sudden death of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in a plane crash near Baramati has shocked the nation. This tragedy leaves the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in a very difficult position. The party must now find a new leader to keep its members together.
Most leaders want his wife, Sunetra Pawar, to take charge immediately. She is currently a member of the Rajya Sabha. The party hopes she can fill the gap and perhaps even become the next Deputy Chief Minister to maintain their power in the state government.
The Push for Sunetra Pawar
The NCP is working quickly to stay stable after this loss. Top leaders like Praful Patel and Chhagan Bhujbal are meeting to decide the next steps. They believe that Sunetra Pawar is the best person to lead the party right now. She has always been active in social work and education in Baramati. Many people know her as a kind and steady person. The party has 41 MLAs who need a strong leader to follow so they do not feel lost.
NCP leader Narhari Zirwal, who is currently serving as the sitting minister, said, “Many people told us that ‘vahini’ (Sunetra Pawar) should be brought into the mainstream.” In addition, Anil Patil, the NCP spokesperson, told Hindustan Times that “We have been working under the leadership of the Pawar family for over two decades and are ready to do so when Ajit Dada is no more.”
Can Sunetra Pawar Keep the Alliance Strong?
The most important question is how Sunetra Pawar will handle the ruling Mahayuti alliance. Her husband was very good at working with different political groups. He helped keep a balance between Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Eknath Shinde. Without his skills, the alliance might face more arguments. Sunetra will have to learn quickly how to negotiate for her party's needs and keep her MLAs happy.

The future of the NCP now depends on Sunetra Pawar. She must transition from a social leader to a political one very quickly. Her main job will be to talk to her MLAs and make sure they stay united. If she succeeds, the party will continue to be a major force in Maharashtra. If not, the political map of the state will change forever. It is a heavy burden for her to carry while also mourning her husband.
