Indian Batter Shreyas Iyer Shows Steady Recovery as BCCI Monitors Spleen Injury Treatment
Team India batter Shreyas Iyer is on the road to recovery after suffering a spleen injury during the third ODI against Australia at the SCG. As first reported by Cricbuzz, the BCCI has confirmed that Iyer’s condition is now stable and that he has been moved out of the ICU.
The incident occurred when Iyer made a diving attempt in the cover region to take a catch off Alex Carey. The impact caused a severe blow to his left lower rib cage, which caused internal bleeding and a laceration to the spleen. He was immediately rushed to a hospital in Sydney, where he remains under close medical supervision.
BCCI Issues Medical Statement
In an official statement, the BCCI said:
“Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on October 25, 2025. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation.
"Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress.”
The board also confirmed that the Indian Team Doctor, Dr. Rizwan Khan, is stationed in Sydney to oversee Iyer’s recovery. Specialists in both Sydney and India are being consulted for regular health updates.
Family and Support in Sydney
According to sources connected with the team, Iyer is no longer in danger and is reacting positively to the therapy. A few of his close friends have been seeing him in the hospital, and one of his relatives is likely to come from Mumbai as soon as the visa procedure is done.
Uncertain Return Timeline for Upcoming Series
While his condition is improving, Iyer is expected to remain in Sydney for a few more days to ensure full recovery before being discharged. All parties involved—the BCCI, team management, and family—are aligned on not rushing his return.
The selectors currently view Iyer as part of the ODI setup, and his next scheduled assignment is the three-match series against South Africa, set to begin on November 30, followed by games on December 3 and December 6. His availability for that series will depend entirely on his recovery timeline.
Meanwhile, the rest of the Indian squad has reached Canberra for the first T20I of the five-match series against Australia, which begins on October 29.
