Mohammed Shami Hits 140 kmph in T20I Comeback but Goes Wicketless Against England

The Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot erupted in loud cheers as India’s star pacer Mohammed Shami made his much-awaited return to international cricket after 14 months. The third T20I between India and England marked Shami’s comeback, with skipper Suryakumar Yadav announcing his inclusion in the playing XI at the toss. “Arshdeep is resting, Shami comes in,” Suryakumar declared after winning the toss, triggering an enthusiastic response from the crowd. India opted to bowl first, setting the stage for Shami’s return to the national side.

A Rusty Outing for the Star Pacer

Shami was sidelined from international cricket for more than a year after last playing for India in the ODI World Cup 2023 final loss against Australia. He is still active domestically but played his first match in Indian colours since the World Cup.

However, his comeback did not work out the way it was supposed to. The pacer, who struggled to recapture his rhythm failed to pick up wickets in his 3-over spell as he conceded 25 at an economy rate of 8.30. Despite his lack of wickets, Shami displayed his usual ability to generate speed, touching close to 140 kmph, and managed to get the ball to shape away, indicating no major concerns regarding his fitness.

India Suffers Defeat but Maintains Series Lead

Despite winning the first two matches of the series, India lost the third T20I to England by 26 runs. While Shami's return was one of the main talking points before the match, the team weren't able to build on the momentum of their previous wins. India was set a challenging target to chase at England's strong batting performance guided their way to the figure of 338. With this result, India leads the five-match series 2-1, keeping the hope of a series victory.

Skipper Suryakumar Backs Shami

India captain Suryakumar Yadav, however, believes Shami will do well in the next games. “I’m sure Shami will do better going forward,” he stated, showing faith in the veteran fast bowler. Shami’s return is a good thing for the India pace attack and it’s yet a positive sign to the team’s chances in the series.

As the series deepens, all eyes will be on Shami recapturing his match-winning form and cementing his place in India's bowling attack.
