From Virat Kohli to Rohit Sharma: Shama Mohamed’s comment sparks controversy
Political analyst Shama Mohamed’s 2018 post wasn’t just about Virat Kohli’s physique; it focused on his reaction to fans who favored foreign cricketers over Indian players. This adds a crucial layer to the story; here’s what reflects that.
A social media firestorm has ignited around Shama Mohamed after a 2018 post resurfaced. Though the details vary, the posts talk of her making public remarks about the perceived "worthiness" of Indian cricket players.
X (then Twitter) post in 2018
In 2018, Virat Kohli’s passionate defense of Indian cricketers against fans who favored foreign players resonated with many.
It was loyalty in 2018. It was physical fitness in 2024. Both comments reveal a tendency to foist factors on athletes rather than focusing on their performance.
Shama fat-shames Rohit Sharma
The core issue lies in the act of fat-shaming itself. On March 2nd, 2025, at 7:52 p.m., the congress leader, in a social media post on X, discriminated against the Indian Cricket Team captain Rohit Sharma as "FAT” and a mediocre captain.
During a cricket match, Mohamed made demeaning remarks about Rohit Sharma's physical appearance, specifically his weight.
These comments were not at all related to his performance but to his body. Social media platforms have now been flooded with negative comments criticizing her for her insensitive behavior of commenting on an athlete’s weight, especially in public forums.
Later, Mohamed justified her statement, saying she has the right to give her opinion in a democratic country and that it was not body shaming. It was a generic tweet about the fitness of a sportsperson. It was not body-shaming
“I always believed a sportsperson should be fit, and I felt he was a bit overweight, so I just tweeted about it,” she mentioned.
She claims she has been attacked for no reason, that she just compared him to previous captains and put a statement. Adding to it, “I have the right. What is wrong with saying that? It is a democracy.”
Congress Responds
Congress reprimanded Shama Mohamed over her remarks, told her to remove the social media post on X, and mentioned practicing caution in the future.
Talking this way about a sportsperson who represents our country is not right. The party will seek a response from her on this, clarified Congress MP Rajani Patel while addressing the issue.
