In the 35 Days Since December 2, 2025, at least 11 Hindus have been Killed Across the Country
Authorities in Bangladesh are probing a fresh killing of a Hindu man using a sharp weapon, the second reported case in a single day. A Hindu grocery owner was killed in Bangladesh's Narsingdi. This is the second such incident in the last 24 hours in Bangladesh.
What Happened to Mani?
Sarat Chakroborty Mani, owner of a grocery shop, was reportedly murdered on Monday (January 5, 2026) night. According to Bangladesh news portals, he was attacked with sharp weapons in the Narsingdi district at around 11 pm.
He is the third Hindu businessman to be killed in recent weeks in Bangladesh. Police and local residents said that he was returning home after closing his shop when unidentified attackers struck him with a sharp, locally-made weapon. He collapsed on the spot, the Police added.
Who was Mani Chakroborty?
According to Palash Upazila Police Station chief (OC) Shahed Al Mamun, Moni was the son of Madan Thakur of Sadharchar Union in Shibpur Upazila. He had been running a grocery shop at Charsindhur Bazar for a long time.
Mani had earlier worked in South Korea and returned to Bangladesh a few years ago, locals confirmed. He later built a house in Brahmandi, Narsingdi town, where he lived with his family.
Second Hindu Man Killed in 24 Hours
Hours before Mani was killed, a 45-year-old factory owner was shot dead in the Jashore district. The factory owner named Rana Pratap also served as an acting editor of a local newspaper.
He was fatally shot in the head by unidentified assailants at around 6 PM on Monday in the Kopalia Bazar area of Manirampur sub-district in Jashore.
Akhtar Faruk Mintu, chairman of the Manoharpur Union Parishad, said, “Pratap had been running an ice factory in Kopalia Bazar for the past two years. On Monday evening, several men called him out of the factory, led him into a nearby alley, and shot him.”
A resident, Ripon Hossain, said the attackers arrived on a motorcycle. He said they had argued with Pratap before firing multiple shots at his head and fleeing the scene.
Police confirmed that seven bullet casings were found near the body. Manirampur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Raziullah Khan said, “Pratap was shot three times in the head, and his throat was slit. After receiving the news, we went to the scene. The body has been recovered and sent to the morgue for an autopsy. We are investigating who was involved.”
Hindu Killings in Bangladesh
India has been expressing concerns over attacks on minorities, especially Hindus, in Bangladesh. Earlier, on January 3, Khokon Chandra Das (50) died after he was brutally attacked. On December 24, a Hindu man, Amrit Mondal, was lynched over alleged extortion in Rajbari town's Pangsha upazila.
On December 18, Dipu Chandra Das (25) was lynched by a mob and his body set on fire over alleged blasphemy in Mymensingh city.
Final Thoughts
From lynchings and mob attacks to alleged targeted shootings, the killings of Hindus in Bangladesh have unfolded at an alarming rate over the past few weeks. At least 11 members of the Hindu community have been killed in Bangladesh over 35 days. It points to a disturbing pattern of violence in Bangladesh.
While the Muhammad Yunus-led interim administration has described the killings of Hindus as "not communal", "exaggerated claims" and "exceptions", the numbers tell a different story. The law and order in Bangladesh has deteriorated sharply under this government, extending well beyond targeted attacks on minorities.
