Massive Security Breach at Red Fort: 7 Delhi Cops Suspended After Dummy Bomb Goes Undetected in Pre-Independence Day Drill

Seven Delhi Police officials, including constables and head constables, were suspended ahead of the 79th Independence Day celebrations during a high-security drill in the Red Fort. The officials were suspended for failing to spot a dummy bomb.

The suspended officials were posted for security at the historic monument, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hoist the national flag and speak to the nation on August 15. Suspension was after a clandestine security drill by the Delhi Police’s high-profile Special Cell.

Dummy Bomb Passed Undetected in Civilian Disguise Drill

As per officials, the exercise was conducted on Saturday, during which Special Cell officials penetrated the Red Fort complex in civvies. They had a dummy explosive device with them to check the alertness and readiness of on-ground security personnel.

“The security personnel on duty were not able to detect or intercept the dummy bomb, which was placed within the complex. This serious lapse has led to their suspension,” an ANI report quoted a senior police official as saying.

Daily Drills Under Tightened Security Before I-Day

In keeping with regular security measures, Delhi Police carries out daily practice drills in the lead-up to Independence Day. The Red Fort, which was declared a high-security area during the period, is among the most sensitive spots in the capital.

The gaffe comes after increased surveillance and round-the-clock rehearsals through physical checks and electronic surveillance systems.

Surveillance Upgrade: 5 New Camera Types Installed

Due to the increased perception of threat, a multi-layered security strategy is being implemented. These include a complete enumeration of residents in the vicinity, high-end vehicle scanning systems, and five varieties of surveillance cameras, including headcount cameras that monitor crowd intensity and detect suspicious movement.

This is the first time such technology will be deployed at the Red Fort for I-Day preparations this year.

High Alert to Persist as PM’s Speech Approaches

The Delhi Police have vowed to be even more vigilant in the next few days, with more staff and intelligence resources to guard the monument. Authorities are also considering potential disciplinary action beyond suspensions.

The episode has raised serious questions about readiness, particularly when India’s highest constitutional functionary is to address the nation from the very location.
