PM Modi Condoles Khaleda Zia’s Passing, Hails Her Contribution to Regional Politics
On Tuesday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi voiced his grief regarding the passing of the ex-PM of Bangladesh and the leader of the Bangladesh National Party, Begum Khaleda Zia. In his reaction to the incident, PM Modi characterized the demise as very hurtful not only for Bangladesh but also for the whole region.
He extended his sympathies not only to her family but also to the people of the neighbouring country, recognizing her as a significant figure in the public domain and an outstanding leader throughout her long career.
Modi’s Condolence Message on X
Sharing his thoughts on X, PM Modi wrote, “Deeply saddened to learn about the passing away of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia in Dhaka.” He added, “Our sincerest condolences to her family and all the people of Bangladesh. May the Almighty grant her family the fortitude to bear this tragic loss.” The message reflected India’s official stance of solidarity.
Acknowledging Her Role in Bilateral Relations
In his statement, PM Modi acknowledged the role played by Khaleda Zia in India-Bangladesh relations and said her efforts would definitely be remembered. She was the one to monitor the engagement of Dhaka and New Delhi during her political career, especially through the times of the regional diplomatic and political transitions, which were very crucial in South Asia.
Recalling a Personal Diplomatic Moment
PM Modi also recalled a key diplomatic interaction from the early phase of his tenure. “I recall my warm meeting with her in Dhaka in 2015,” he stated, mentioning his trip to Bangladesh one year after taking over as Prime Minister. Besides this, he also mentioned that the vision and legacy of Khaleda Zia would help in the future of India-Bangladesh relations.
A Moment of Reflection for Regional Politics
Khaleda Zia’s death marks the end of an era in Bangladesh politics, and one can hardly compare this event to the deaths of earlier great regional leaders. For India, the situation highlights the need for maintaining continuity in neighbourhood diplomacy.
The political change in Bangladesh will not affect the reference of her legacy, which is still valid in the case of future India–Bangladesh engagement and regional stability.
