Colombia's Petro Clarifies "Get Rid of Trump" Comment Amid Drug Boat Strike Dispute
Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro has sharply condemned the US President Donald Trump and his policies, sparking controversy. He remarked that Trump can be replaced to achieve better diplomatic outcomes if needed.
The dispute has intensified into verbal attacks, with Trump calling Petro an "illegal drug leader" and ending US subsidies, and Petro suggesting "get rid of Trump" for a peaceful resolution.
Trump & Petro Exchange Heated Words Amid Escalating Drug Dispute
In an interview with Daniel Coronell from Univision, Gustavo Petro said, “Humanity has a first offramp, it is to choose to change Trump in various ways. The easiest way may be through Trump himself. If not, get rid of Trump,” as mentioned in the New York Post report. Petro’s criticism of Trump stems from various factors, including an alleged US airstrike in Colombian waters; his drug trafficking policy, comments on migration, and overall rhetoric towards Latin America.
After passing sharp remarks, Petro shared on X that his comments were not intended to threaten the US president. He said, “I did not threaten Trump, I only said that Trump should change his heart, from defending death policies in the world like the genocide in Palestine, to life policies.”
He further added, “If there is no such change, then the American people themselves will change Trump, because one cannot go toward general suicide.” The Colombian president did not stop at that; he also tried to emphasize the democratic principle, mentioning, “In the 21st century, some believe they can become kings and viceroys, but in republics, it is not possible. Here, the heads of kings are cut off if they come with a king’s attitude.”
