JD-Vance-Breaks-Silence,-Puts-Pakistan-on-BlastJD Vance urges Pakistan to act after the Pahalgam terror attack during his India visit

United States Vice President JD Vance has denounced the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed 26 lives. He described it as one of the gruesome acts of violence against civilians in the Kashmir Valley in recent years. Vance, who was on an official tour of India at the time, also urged Pakistan to assist in eliminating terrorist networks said to be functioning from its territory.

Talking to Fox News, Vance expressed concern that he was “concerned whenever you see a hotspot emerging, particularly between two nuclear powers,” alluding to the ever-present tension between Pakistan and India.

Diplomatic but Strong Words on Pakistan

Although refraining from blame, the US vice president implored that Pakistan had a role in preventing terrorists from having a safe haven in its territory.
“Hopefully, India will react to this terrorist attack in a manner that does not cause a wider regional conflict,” Vance said. “And hopefully, Pakistan, to the extent they’re culpable, will work with India to ensure that the terrorists, sometimes acting in their territory, are tracked down and dealt with.”

The remarks are the strongest US signal to date that Washington believes there is some cross-border dynamic involved in the Pahalgam massacre. Other high-ranking US officials, such as President Donald Trump, have denounced the attack as ‘unconscionable,’ but have not referred to Pakistan in public.

Direct Outreach to PM Modi

In the wake of the attack, Vance made a direct outreach to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing condolences and the United States’ fullest cooperation in the common struggle against terrorism.

“Vice President @JDVance phoned Prime Minister @narendramodi and strongly condemned the dastardly terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. “He expressed his deepest condolences. And reaffirmed that the United States stands shoulder to shoulder with the people of India during this challenging moment.”

Massacre in the Meadow The Pahalgam attack took place in Baisaran, a popular high-altitude meadow near the hill town, often dubbed ‘Mini Switzerland’. The victims, mostly unarmed tourists, were attacked by terrorists who reportedly took advantage of the area’s remote location, accessible only on foot or by pony. This has raised fresh questions about civilian security in Kashmir’s high-tourist zones and has prompted India to step up surveillance and patrolling in the region. JD Vance’s visit, which was meant to consolidate bilateral relations and discuss trade possibilities, was soon overshadowed by the tragedy. His presence in India at the time of the attack added more urgency to Washington’s reaction.
