KP Sharma Oli Resigns Due to Massive Anti-Government Protests, Plans to Flee the Country

The Prime Minister of Nepal resigned from his position on Tuesday as the protestors hit his office and started chanting anti-government slogans. The demonstrators were angry at the deaths that occurred during the social media ban protests. KP Sharma Oli is said to be fleeing his country.

Why Did KP Sharma Oli Resign?

As the Nepal government, led by KP Sharma Oli, announced a ban on over 26 popular social media apps, its citizens took to the streets to protest in large numbers. Many of these protesters were youngsters who strongly condemned the move. 

However, the mob quickly turned violent. The police resorted to open firing, leading to the death of 16 people. The protesters, enraged by these fatalities, set the private residence of KP Sharma Oli in Balkot on fire. As a result, the Nepalese government revoked the ban on those social media platforms. 

India’s Response to Nepal Protests

India, a close friend of Nepal and home to thousands of migrant workers from Nepal, has said that it is “closely monitoring” the ongoing events in Nepal. A statement from the Indian Foreign Ministry said, “As a close friend and neighbour, we hope that all concerned will exercise restraint and address any issues through peaceful means and dialogue.”

Additionally, a combined statement from Australia, Finland, Japan, France, South Korea, Norway, the UK, Germany, and the US expressed deep regret about the brutal protests in Nepal. They requested the parties in Nepal to make optimum efforts to control these protests and ensure that fundamental citizen rights are protected.

On the other hand, protest organizers across Nepal regarded these protests as the “demonstrations by Genz,” and have blamed the government for being unable to deal with the growing corruption and improve the economy.

To put it in a few words, Nepal PM KP Sharma Oli’s decision to ban social media apps was not accepted by the citizens of Nepal. Protests were help to show their disagreement. However, the incident quickly took a violent turn and resulted in the death of 16 people. Subsequently, the government decided to revoke the ban, and the Nepalese Prime Minister resigned from his position.
