Indian student Tanya Tyagi dies suddenly in Canada; cause unclear, family appeals to PM Modi

Indian student Tanya Tyagi at the University of Calgary in Canada died unexpectedly on June 17 under mysterious conditions. Why she died remains a mystery, but social media accounts say she might have had a fatal heart attack.

Her untimely death has shocked both her Delhi-based family and the Indian student community overseas. The occurrence is now making headlines, with her family approaching the Office of the Prime Minister for assistance to repatriate her body.

Who Was Tanya, and Why Was She in Canada?

Tanya, a student from Vijay Park in Northeast Delhi, had gone to Canada to pursue higher studies. She was a student at the University of Calgary and had aspirations of creating a better future. Her unexpected and mysterious death has created shock and sadness, with everybody wondering what went wrong.

What Has the Indian Consulate Spoken About?

The Indian Consulate General in Vancouver posted on X (previously Twitter) confirming her death and offering condolences. “We are shocked by the untimely passing away of Ms Tanya Tyagi, an Indian student studying at the University of Calgary,” it read.

The consulate further said it is in contact with Canadian officials and will give complete help to her family. But the line was criticized for calling Tanya ‘his’ rather than ‘her,’ something many considered to be sloppy at such a critical moment.

Was It a Heart Attack?

Even though the Canadian authorities have not issued an official report, a popular post on X is claiming that Tanya expired due to a heart attack. The post further contains her home address in Delhi and states that her family has approached the Indian government.

They have requested the government to assist in bringing her body back for repatriation. At this point, the hearsay of the heart attack cannot be substantiated.

Are Indian Students Abroad at Greater Risk?

Tanya’s death comes in a string of troubling cases of Indian students abroad. Only a few months ago, 20-year-old Indian student and resident of the United States, Sudiksha Konanki, went missing during a vacation in the Dominican Republic. She was last spotted on a beach in Punta Cana, and there has been no sign of her since.

These cases are causing severe concerns regarding the mental health care and safety provisions for Indian students studying and living overseas. Indian families tend to be kept in the dark, with prolonged waiting periods, minimal updates, and convoluted cross-border processes.

What’s the Family Demanding?

Tanya’s grieving family is now urging the Indian government to help bring her body back from Canada. Their appeal to Prime Minister Modi has gone viral, adding more pressure on the authorities to act swiftly. The silence from Canadian officials has only deepened the family’s distress.

As of now, the mystery around Tanya Tyagi’s death remains unsolved, and her family waits for answers.
