Myanmar Military Aircraft has Conducted Over 2000 Airstrikes Inside Rebel-held Areas in 2025
A military air strike on a hospital in Myanmar has killed 31 and injured 68 people. The incident took place at the general hospital in Mrauk-U in western Rakhine state on Wednesday (December 10, 2025). The attack, which targeted civilians and medical personnel, has triggered global outrage and renewed calls for international intervention.
Myanmar Hospital Air Strike
“The situation is very terrible,” he said. “As for now, we can confirm there are 31 deaths, and we think there will be more deaths. Also, there are 68 wounded and will be more and more," said on-site aid worker Wai Hun Aung.
“The 300-bed hospital was overflowing with patients at the time of the strike, said the aid worker, as “most healthcare services across swathes of Rakhine state have been suspended amid the ongoing fighting.”
Wai Hun Aung posted images of a collapsed roof, shattered columns and beams, and the bodies of victims laid out on the ground on social media.
"The Mrauk U General Hospital was completely destroyed," Khine Thu Kha, a spokesman for the Arakan Army, told reporters. "The high number of casualties occurred because the hospital took a direct hit," the spokesperson added.
The junta is waging a withering offensive ahead of elections that start at the end of this month. The military has set polls starting December 28.
Words from the Eyewitnesses
Soon after he heard the sound of explosions, a 23-year-old resident of Mrauk U said he rushed to the site. "When I arrived, the hospital was on fire," he said, asking not to be named because of security concerns. "I saw many bodies lying around and many injured people."
Myanmar Military Attack
The junta, which has the only air force in Myanmar, has been conducting airstrikes to hit targets inside rebel-held areas. From January to late November this year, the junta conducted 2,165 airstrikes, compared to 1,716 such incidents during the whole of 2024, according to the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project.
Myanmar Civil War
Resistance groups formed in the wake of the coup have combined with major ethnic armies like the Arakan Army to fight against the military.
The Arakan Army has pushed the military out of 14 of Rakhine's 17 townships since the breakdown of a ceasefire in 2023. They also gained control of an area larger than Belgium, according to an analysis published by the ISEAS - Yusof Ishak Institute.
Mrauk-U township is located in the north of Rakhine state. It has been under the control of the Arakan Army since last year.
Myanmar has been facing serious conflict since the military suppressed protests against a 2021 coup that unseated the elected government led by Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. The military is bent on retaining control ahead of polls scheduled for 28 December 2025.
