Lashkar-e-Jihadi Threat Sparks Massive Security Clampdown in Mumbai Ahead of Ganesh Visarjan
Mumbai authorities have increased security around the city after a chilling threat of terror was made to the Mumbai Traffic Police official WhatsApp number. The caller, identifying himself as a member of a group called 'Lashkar-e-Jihadi', threatened mass bombings synchronized to coincide with Ganesh Visarjan and Anant Chaturdashi, which caused a huge security headache among millions of residents converging at the festival.
Terror Threat Warns Mumbai of Massive Explosions
The message states that 34 cars have been placed across Mumbai, which have been fitted with human bombs - either carried or fitted explosives which are to be detonated by terrorists. The threat also said that 14 Pakistani terrorists were involved and warned that an incredible amount of 400 kg of RDX was to be used, with the bombings set to create widespread destruction.
The sender had ominously predicted that the explosions would cause the whole city ‘shake,’ portending disastrous repercussions. One report even indicated the possibility of fatalities to the tune of one crore people, a figure thought to be hyperbolic but fear-inducing.
Security Response in Full Swing
As a counter to the threat, Mumbai Police and associated law enforcement agencies immediately tightened security measures. Cybersecurity and anti-terrorism squads have been deployed to trace the source of the WhatsApp message, analyze its authenticity, and identify the perpetrators.
Intensified security measures now extend to:
Stringent checks at important junctions, public areas, and VIP routes.
Enhanced patrolling and surveillance.
Deployment of bomb detection squads and traffic diversions to control crowd flow along the Ganesh Visarjan procession route.
The police assured that every lead is being thoroughly investigated and that updates would be provided in due course.
Growing Concern Ahead of Festival
The threat occurring right before Anant Chaturdashi, and when Mumbai witnesses huge public participation in Ganesh Visarjan celebrations, naturally inflates the profile of the threat. Millions turn to the coastal belt for the immersion of Ganpati idols, which necessitates stringent security and crowd management measures.
These threats have echoes in history. Interestingly, earlier terror attacks in Mumbai have been against large groups or public transport systems, highlighting the importance of cautious security measures. Though the present threat is unconfirmed, authorities are taking it very seriously to maintain public safety.
A threat of terror allegedly by ‘Lashkar-e-Jihadi’ is warning of 34 human bombs in cars in Mumbai, 14 infiltrators, and 400 kg of RDX. The city remains at high alert with the festive season for Ganesh Visarjan near at hand. Security personnel are probing and increasing protective measures at prime locations.
