Women Maoist Commanders Killed in Gadchiroli – CRPF Operation Secures Major Win
In a breakthrough, security forces in Gadchiroli’s Etapalli tehsil gunned down two feared women Maoist commanders in the dense Modaske forests. The organization involved five C-60 commando teams operating under the 191st battalion of the CRPF. Taking action upon reliable information of a sabotage plot, the teams sealed off the hideout in the jungle at dawn. The encounter unfolded in torrential rains, lasting close to eight hours, further illustrating the difficulties faced in conducting operations in terrains festooned with woods and booby traps.
Weapons, Gear, and Key Intel Recovered
It was a prolonged firefight, and authorities seized weapons and insurgent equipment, including an AK-47 rifle, one pistol, 37 live rounds, two walkie-talkies, and other items. Among the slain guerrillas was Sumitra, alias Sunita Veladi, aged 38, from Madvei village.
The police confirmed that a reward of Rs. 14 lakh was promised for the heads of the two women. According to officials, the two commanders were highly trained operatives and were instrumental in planning Maoist activities in the area. It is expected that the recovery of the gear and intelligence will greatly help further operations to curb the remaining insurgents.
A Sharp Decline in Maoist Strength
This Maoist encounter in Gadchiroli has dealt a severe blow to the local Maoist network, which now reportedly has just 23 active members. Once a formidable stronghold of Left-wing extremism in Maharashtra, the region has seen repeated encounters this year, with this being the fifth major clash.
Security forces say the operation reflects better coordination between state police and central forces and improved intelligence gathering. Each successful mission weakens this threat, creating safer conditions for local communities.
According to officials, such operations demonstrate yet again the security forces' commitment to fighting extremism and restoring peace, even though they pose a danger to police personnel's lives. The populace in the area felt relieved as the law enforcement officials looked more confident in their battle, gradually reducing the insurgents' influence.
