Kim Soo-Hyun vs. Kim Sae-Ron Scandal: Legal Firestorm Erupts Over Privacy and Reputation

 

Actor Kim Soo-Hyun has filed criminal lawsuits against the family of the late actress Kim Sae-Ron and the operator of the YouTube channel Garo Sero Research Institute. His agency, Gold Medallist, announced the legal action on March 20, 2025, following the unauthorized distribution of a private image that surfaced online.

 

Legal Battle Over Private Photo

 

The controversy erupted when Garo Sero Research Institute's operator, Kim Sae-eui, shared a photo allegedly depicting Kim Soo-hyun in a compromising position. Reports suggest that the image was taken during his past relationship with Kim Sae-Ron. The lawsuit claims that sharing such content without consent violates laws on the distribution of private images and constitutes sexual harassment.

Gold Medallist stressed that legal action was necessary after Garo Sero allegedly threatened to release more such images. The agency emphasized that this act not only harms Kim Soo-hyun’s reputation but also breaches the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes.

 

Kim Sae-Ron's Family Involvement

 

Kim Sae-ron’s family has not taken legal steps against Kim Soo-hyun but has filed a defamation lawsuit against YouTuber Lee Jin-ho. They also raised concerns about financial difficulties, mentioning a loan from Kim Soo-hyun after Kim Sae-ron’s DUI incident in 2022. Gold Medallist did not comment on the financial claims but maintained that any defamation would be addressed separately.

 

Fallout on Kim Soo-Hyun's Career

 

The controversy has already affected Kim Soo-hyun’s professional commitments. His scheduled appearance at the Kaohsiung Cherry Blossom Festival in Taiwan is now uncertain. If organizers cancel his participation, he may face a financial penalty of approximately 1.32 billion KRW (USD 911,000).

Additionally, the scandal has led some brands to reconsider their association with the actor, adding to the challenges he faces. Public opinion remains divided, with some supporting his legal action while others question the circumstances surrounding the controversy.

A legal team headed by attorney Kim Jong Bok of Kim Soo-Hyun confirmed that it was analyzing further legal actions but has restrained further involvement with lawsuits against Kim Sae-ron's family "out of respect for her demise."

But warned that any continuation of disseminating misleading info would provoke a stronger backlash. As the legal battle unfolds, discussion on privacy, defamation, and the plight of public figures rages on. This case's outcome could very well set a precedent for dealing with future cases like itself.
