Gulmarg fashion show triggers controversy; organisers issue apology

A fashion show in Jammu and Kashmir’s Gulmarg has triggered political tensions after pictures of models striking poses in provocative attire went viral. The show, which was hosted at a ski resort, came under intense criticism, especially as it occurred in the sacred month of Ramadan.

Luxury resort holiday brand Shivan and Narresh, the show organisers, subsequently issued an apology, regretting the furore. “We regret the pain caused by our recent showcase in Gulmarg during the sacred month of Ramadan. Our only intention was to celebrate creativity and the ski &apres-ski lifestyle, without any desire to offend anyone or any other religious sentiments,” said the brand in X, formerly known as Twitter.

Responding to the backlash, organisers reiterated their dedication to cultural sensitivity. “Respect for all cultures and traditions is at our heart, and we acknowledge the concerns raised. We sincerely apologise for any unintended discomfort and appreciate the feedback from our community. We remain committed to being more mindful and respectful,” the statement read.

Political Outrage and Government’s Response

The incident provoked collective indignation, and the administration came under opposition parties’ criticism. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah drew flak with people wondering what role the government had to enable such a process. Retracting against the outcry, Abdullah asserted in the Assembly that there was no intervention from the government.

It was a closed party, and no permission was sought from us. We have instructed if anything illegal has occurred, some action should be taken,” he stated. He admitted the ire of the people, further commenting, “Shock and outrage are completely understandable. The pictures that I have been shown indicate the total lack of respect for local sensitivities during this holy period.

But the explanation did little to assuage critics. People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti criticised the event, terming it ‘deeply troubling.’

“The occurrence of such an incident, which deteriorated into indecent show, in the holy month of Ramadan is shocking. It is shameful that it is open to private hoteliers to facilitate this kind of obscenity by conducting such shows which are flagrantly contrary to our culture,” Mufti said. She cautioned against sweeping the event as a private affair under the rig, for “eventually, it would cause serious harm to our culture and society.”

BJP Questions Government’s Stand

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also barged into the controversy, with the Leader of the Opposition (LoP), Sunil Sharma, accusing Omar Abdullah of lying. “Omar Abdullah lies within the Assembly and outside as well. How is it that such a large function was taking place in your relatives’ hotel, and you were unaware? I think you must have arranged this programme,” Sharma alleged.

He also indicated that the Chief Minister was trying to keep himself away from the incident only after it ignited a controversy. “Today, as people raised this issue, you are informing in the Assembly that you will hold an inquiry. Hold an inquiry about your relatives and family members. He should tell the truth instead of telling a lie,” Sharma added.

Inquiry Ordered

Following the row, the administration has been asked to probe the issue. Omar Abdullah reaffirmed that there was no government infrastructure used and no official machinery involved. He said that if any breach of laws was detected, action would be taken, and the case should be handed over to the police if required.

As the political repercussions persist, the event has again brought into question the convergence of contemporary lifestyle activities and cultural sensitivities in the region.
