Income Tax Department Says ITR Filing Deadline Not Extended, Beware of the Fake News
Some fake messages have been circulating online about extending the deadline for filing the ITR. However, the Income Tax Department has discarded the news, confirming it as counterfeit. The fake notice claimed that the ITR filing deadline had been extended beyond 15 September. The ITD, on its official X handle, confirmed that “The due date for filing ITRs remains 15.09.2025.”
What was Mentioned in the Fake Notice?
The fake notice that is circulating and has reached the masses by now claims that the Central Board of Direct Taxes has announced the due date for ITR filing as September 30. It didn’t just stop at this; it went on to further explain the reason behind this extension. The notice cited system readiness and concerns raised by stakeholders as two of the key reasons for this deadline extension.
However, it is also true that the deadline to file the ITR was extended from July 31 to September 15 due to some technical errors.
Income Tax Department Confirms the Truth
The Income Tax Department of India has announced on X (previously Twitter) that the last date to file ITR remains 15 September. It also advised individuals to rely only on the official Income Tax India account for any such updates. Additionally, it encouraged taxpayers to file their ITRs on time, warning that failure to do so would result in penalties.
ITD said, “A fake news is in circulation stating that the due date for filing ITRs (originally due on 31.07.2025, and extended to 15.09.2025) has been further extended to 30.09.2025.” Adding that, “The due date for filing ITRs remains 15.09.2025. Taxpayers are advised to rely only on official @IncomeTaxIndia updates.”
The fake notice regarding the ITR filing deadline extension has been promptly confirmed as false by the Income Tax Department, thankfully. Had there been a delay of even a single day to prove it, taxpayers across India might have faced penalties.
The ITD has advised taxpayers to rely only on official sources for any kind of announcement and to be cautious of fake notices. In a post shared on X, the department stated, “We are providing support through calls, live chats, WebEx sessions & Twitter/X” to address individual queries.
