Semiconductor Parks are Developing, India will Hold Notable Share of Semiconductor Markets, Says Modi
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the audience at the Semicon India 2025. He mentioned the potential semiconductor market holds and that its global market value will soon be $1 trillion.
He further added that India will be a significant contributor to this market value, as 10 projects with an investment of more than $18 billion, amounting to Rs. 1.5 lakh crores are already underway.
India’s Strategic Push Towards Self-Reliance
PM Modi shared some insights about the current global market share occupied by the semiconductor industry, saying, “The global semiconductor market has already reached $600 billion, and in the coming years, it is expected to surpass $1 trillion.. India is advancing in the semiconductor sector and will hold a significant share in this $1 trillion market.”
During this third edition of Semicon India, Ashwini Vaishnaw, the minister of Electronics and Information Technology, handed over chips to PM Modi. She presented four chips from four different sanctioned projects.
One of these chips was the Vikram chip developed by ISRO’s Semiconductor Laboratory. It is basically a 32-bit microprocessor that is known to perform smoothly under extreme conditions of launch vehicles.
In his speech, the Prime Minister beautifully compared these chips to diamonds with the metaphor, “Oil was black gold, but chips are digital diamonds.” Further extending this analogy, he said that oil shaped the previous century, and the world’s fate was decided by oil wells. The world economies depended mainly on the amount of petroleum extracted from these wells.

PM Modi also shared that semiconductor parks are under development across the country. These parks are a plug-and-play infrastructure model surrounded by facilities like ports, airport connectivity, land, power supply, and skilled workers. He also envisioned India’s transition from performing backend operations to becoming a semiconductor manufacturing hub.
He remarked, “Our journey began late…but nothing can stop us now.” He further shared that CG Power’s pilot plant initiated its operations on 28 August and that Kaynes's pilot plant will also begin.
The PM ended his speech by informing that these chips will power the latest technologies in the coming years. The country is putting its efforts into the National Critical Mineral Mission, trying to meet the need for rare minerals without any external sourcing.
