DeepSeek AI's Ability to Compete with Western Models Questioned as it Evades Sensitive Political Issues, Indo-Sino War, and Arunachal Pradesh

China's new AI model—-China’s DeepSeek AI, developed by the Chinese startup Moonshot AI, has gained attention for its performance, which rivals OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. Despite its success, the model faces significant limitations when handling politically sensitive topics.

DeepSeek Avoids Sensitive Topics

It evades answers when asked of the 1962 Indo-Sino War or Arunachal Pradesh, saying nothing to that effect of its causes and implications. This AI would often just say that, "Sorry, that's beyond my current scope." Or if asked, is Arunachal Pradesh a part of India, then the AI never tries to make an answer; it just drops the question in itself. In short it aviods giving answers to sensitive topics.

Tiananmen Square and Other Historical Events

DeepSeek does not mention the more controversial histories of events in China, such as the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre. Upon being asked about the famous "Tank Man," it responded before it cut off with the text "Sorry, that's beyond my current scope." Other AI applications, including those known as ChatGPT and Gemini, elaborate on such events.

The Indo-Sino War and Arunachal Pradesh

The Arunachal Pradesh question is one where DeepSeek can't quite stay away. According to China, the area comes under the nomenclature as "South Tibet" or "Zangnan."

The issue is highly disputable with both India and China claiming this land as a separate part of each other's countries. DeepSeek does not dare to go around this subject while giving the utmost vague replies.

China's Take on Kashmir and Ladakh

DeepSeek also avoids talking about Kashmir and Ladakh. When asked about Aksai Chin, a region China claims in Ladakh, the AI again responds with, "Sorry, that's beyond my current scope."

Similarly, it gives a neutral response when asked about the Kashmir conflict, highlighting the complexity and China's consistent stance of advocating for peaceful resolutions.

Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Other Sensitive Issues

DeepSeek analyzes Taiwan strictly adhering to China's stance, saying, "Taiwan has always been an inalienable part of China's territory." It trivializes the 2019 Hong Kong protests as disturbances created by a "small number of people with ulterior motives.

Human Rights and Xinjiang

DeepSeek also fails to address serious human rights issues, especially those concerning the treatment of Uyghur Muslims in Xinjiang. When asked about allegations of forced labor and re-education camps, the AI gives a generic response, acknowledging the region's cultural history but refusing to delve into the human rights issues.

The Dalai Lama and Tibet

On Tibet and the Dalai Lama, DeepSeek supports the PRC's argument that Tibet has been part of China for over a thousand years and that the Dalai Lama is an important figure in Tibetan Buddhism. It is a stock answer to issues of Tibet's autonomy and the Dalai Lama's exile.

DeepSeek Answers to Politically Sensitive Issues

In all politically sensitive inquiries, DeepSeek responds with "Sorry, that's beyond my current scope." This pattern of responses raises questions about its programming, its censorship of matters tied to the Chinese government, and its possible biases.

Chinese Government's Influence on AI Models

As the global debate on AI continues to be heated, and especially with the rapid developments seen in China. Questions arise over how DeepSeek, and similarly other AI models, approach sensitive geopolitical topics.

While some admire its ability to compete with models from the West, its non-transparency and unwillingness to engage in public discourse reflect some of the inherent challenges of censorship in AI technology.
