Kangana Ranaut and Hansal Mehta’s Social Media Feud Sparks Fresh Controversy Over Political Bias in Bollywood
The filmmaker Hansal Mehta and actor Kangana Ranaut engaged once more on social media, this time taking the bitter exchange into many heated debates after Mehta commented on the recent demolishing of a venue for comedian Kunal Kamra in Mumbai. This particular controversy took the exchange into a domain where Kangana was alone in calling Mehta "bitter and stupid."
The Controversy About Demolitions
Kunal Kamra’s performance space was demolished by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) after he made jokes about Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Hansal Mehta condemned the move, calling it an attack on freedom of speech. A social media user then questioned why Mehta hadn’t supported Kangana when her Mumbai office was demolished in 2020.
Mehta responded by questioning if Kangana’s demolition was linked to her freedom of expression or alleged construction violations. "Was her house vandalized? Did goons enter her premises? Did they do this to challenge her freedom of expression or for alleged FSI violations?" he asked on X (formerly Twitter).
Kangana's Strong Response
Kangana responded by accusing Mehta of making false statements. According to Kangana, she was threatened before the demolition, which the High Court later declared illegal. She slammed Mehta for saying, "It seems your insecurity and mediocreity have made you not just bitter and stupid but blind too."
She further accused Mehta of pushing an agenda and dismissed his remarks as uninformed. "Don’t try to sell your dumb lies and agendas in matters related to my ordeals. Stay out of it," she added. Mehta responded with a short message: "Get well soon."
Political and Industry Implications
The exchange has reignited debates about political bias in Bollywood and freedom of expression. In 2020, Kangana’s Mumbai office was partially demolished by the BMC amid her public spat with the then Shiv Sena-led Maharashtra government. The demolition was widely seen as politically motivated.
This latest clash also brings back memories of the duo’s past professional association. Mehta directed Kangana in the 2017 film Simran, but their relationship soured post-release, with both making critical remarks about each other.
The Bigger Picture
This is much more than a personal fight, although it tends to include that. It also involves politics, film, and free speech in India. Kamra's show of Mehta's vocal support and Kangana's reply demonstrate clearly how divided are the opinions on these issues.
The same selective outrage and political loyalty debate in Bollywood will continue energizing conversations. However, both Mehta and Kangana stick to their respective positions.
