BSNL Reports Profit and Plans Rs. 47,000 Crore Expansion as Govt Sanctions Rs. 6,982 Crore for 4G Growth

The Indian government has given another big push to Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL). It has approved fresh capital spending of Rs. 6,982 crore in 2025 to expand the company’s BSNL Capex across the country. This decision marks another step in the revival plan of the state-owned telecom firm.

This support comes after several large packages in recent years. In 2019, BSNL received Rs. 69,000 crore. In 2022, it was given Rs. 1.64 lakh crore. In 2023, the company also got spectrum worth Rs. 89,000 crore. With this new approval, the total support for BSNL has now crossed Rs. 3.22 lakh crore.

Rapid BSNL 4G Rollout with Indian Technology

BSNL has been working quickly to roll out its 4G services. By July 31, 2025, the company had set up 96,300 sites for 4G. Out of these, 91,281 are already live. The plan is to add 1,00,000 more towers soon, which will further improve coverage in both cities and villages.

The rollout is being carried out with the help of Indian companies. A consortium led by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Tejas Networks, and C-DOT is supplying the core and radio equipment. This makes BSNL different from private operators that use foreign technology. The focus on domestic technology is also in line with India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat mission.

Signs of Financial Recovery and Future Growth

The financial performance has started showing signs of recovery for BSNL. After several years of losses, the company began operating profit in FY 2020-21. Further, in Q3 and Q4 of FY 2024-25, it declared net profits of Rs. 262 crore and Rs. 280 crore, respectively, as a testament that the revival packages have indeed borne fruit.

Along with the new Rs. 6,982 crore, the Department of Telecommunications is also planning a much bigger capex of Rs. 47,000 crore for BSNL. The operator invested about Rs. 25,000 crore last year to install 1 lakh towers. These steps will prepare the company for 5G services in the future since the current 4G network is being built with easy upgrade options.

The new grant is slated to accelerate the rollout of once-thriving 4G services amidst the lack of connectivity prevailing in rural or urban zones and dent the position of BSNL vis-à-vis the private establishments of telecom. Thus, to some extent, digital inclusion somewhere went on supporting India's larger objective of delivering these high-speed services to the masses.

With this approval, BSNL is on the brink of an evolution. With strong financing, wider coverage, and future-ready infrastructure, the operator will thus have to face serious competition in the Indian telecom market.
