The Election Commission of India (ECI) has updated the schedule for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in six regions. This extension in deadlines for the large-scale house-to-house verification drive is intended to ensure the maximum inclusion of every eligible citizen and maintain accurate voter lists. The final electoral rolls are set for publication in February 2026.

Revised Deadlines for Six Regions

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced revisions in Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar. The ECI made this announcement on December 11.

The SIR exercise in Uttar Pradesh began on November 4. The ECI previously extended the deadline for the house-to-house enumeration phase from December 4 to  December 11. The new revision shows the Commission's efforts to manage the large-scale exercise.

The Election Commission informed, “The schedule for Kerala was revised earlier and the Enumeration Period for the State of Kerala would end by 18.12.2025 and the draft Electoral Roll will be published on 23.12.2025.”

The ECI further added, “In order to ensure that no eligible elector is left behind, new electors are being encouraged to fill up the Form 6 along with the Declaration and submit them to the BLOs (booth-level officers) or fill the Form and Declaration online using the ECINet App or website to get their names included in the final electoral rolls, which will be published in February, 2026.”

Focus on Accuracy and Inclusion

The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) aims for accurate electoral rolls, as it is important to maintain the sanctity of the electoral process. ECI officials emphasize that all voters who are eligible must be included.

The drive seeks to prevent duplicate entries, deceased persons, or migrated individuals. As the officials have to visit multiple households distributing and collecting enumeration forms, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) are key to this verification process.

The ECI has also instructed officials to focus on vulnerable voters, which includes the elderly, differently-abled, and economically weaker sections. The entire process aims to prevent the disenfranchisement of eligible citizens. It also addresses issues like 'address-mismatch' in urban areas.
