Pakistan Cricket Board reports financial drains and massive Rs 869 crore

The International Cricket Council (ICC) declared in November 2021 that Pakistan would host the Champions Trophy for the eighth time in 2025. Despite spending about Rs 869 crore, the event resulted in a loss of over Rs 700 crore, which disappointed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

PCB suffers losses

Pakistan's cricket situation was already chaotic, with the men's national squad finding it difficult to achieve success on the international front. Furthermore, it has been stated that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has suffered significant financial losses as a result of hosting the ICC Champions Trophy.

Pakistan could play only one game in their homeland, and they have suffered a huge loss of Rs 869 crore. An additional Rs 332 crore was spent on event preparations, but it earned only Rs 50 crore from hosting fees, ticket sales, and sponsorships, resulting in a loss of around Rs 705 crore.

In the tournament's Group A stage, Pakistan faced a tough defeat to New Zealand in Lahore before moving to Dubai for a high-stakes encounter against arch-rivals India. Their final group match against Bangladesh was washed out, leaving them prematurely eliminated without registering a win.

Aftermath of the Loss

According to sources, a significant cut of 90 per cent was made to match fees for the national T20 competition, and a comparable decrease of 87.5 per cent was made to reserve player compensation. Even five-star hotels were replaced with budget hotels for the players.

Later on, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi rejected the decision and intended to move forward with reassessing the situation. Sources suggested that a revision was in process even though PCB didn’t officially disclose it.
