Chiranjeevi’s Family Legacy Remark Triggers Debate on Gender Equality and Social Norms: Sexist Remark
Legacy or gender bias? Chiranjeevi’s comment triggers controversy: Telugu cinema legend Chiranjeevi has landed in controversy over his remarks about wanting a grandson to continue his family legacy.
Speaking at a film event in Hyderabad, he expressed his desire for his son, actor Ram Charan, to have a boy. While his words may have been intended as lighthearted, they have ignited criticism from political leaders and social commentators, who see them as reinforcing outdated gender biases.
Criticism Over Gender Bias
The political opposition was swift to condemn the statement made by Chiranjeevi, as it smacks of having its roots very deep in patriarchal values. Congress MP Jebi Mather described them as sad and unfortunate because boys and girls contribute equally to society. She argued that the inheritance or legacy should not be judged in terms of gender but by value and achievement.
CPI-M leader Brinda Karat also hit out at Chiranjeevi for his remark, calling "crass" and "sexist" by herself. She stated that such utterances fan son preference, which has been an age-old contributor to gender discrimination in India.
"When public figures make such remarks, it reinforces the stereotypes. In a country where the sex ratio is skewed, such statements further add to the burdens on women for being mothers or sons," remarked Karat.
A Faith Mirror of Deep-Rooted Beliefs
Chiranjeevi's remark of feeling more like a "ladies' hostel warden" because of the granddaughters has further soured things. Most often, they say, such comments belittle the status of daughters and granddaughters in the heritage of a family.
YSR Congress Party spokesperson Shyamala rounded on him for being reflective of "medieval thinking." She added that Ram Charan's wife, Upasana Kamineni, has been successful as an entrepreneur, proving women have as much right to carry on a legacy as men.
Hence, netizens claim, though casual, that it touches a larger and broader societal issue. In several parts of the country, the mindset that, by and large, the family name and achievement can be borne only by a male is alive. Critics of Chiranjeevi say that such measurements are creating more walls around gender progress and reinforcing outdated traditions that should be left behind.
Public Reaction and Further Discussion
The controversy seems to have brought on discussions on social media platforms where many of them are sharing their disappointments with the actor's comments. Some have rushed to Chiranjeevi's defense arguing that the statements were taken out of context.
But the essential debate still goes on- why is the legacy still perceived in favor of sons while being disdained in the case of daughters?
Chiranjeevi has not even bothered to grace the controversy with a response. Yet again, this would bear out the celebrity and influential value attached to words in societies. It has indeed been an unfortunate incident, as even in a world fighting for gender equality;
public statements that hold a priority for sons over daughters continue to be criticized more strongly.
Indeed, many are hopeful that such arguments eventually lead to a new awareness about a more gender-inclusive approach to inheritance or legacy inheritance or a legacy that will honor and value individuals according to what they bring to the table and not by virtue of their gender.
