Lezim Dance Sparks Debate: Chhaava Filmmakers Edit Film to Ensure Historical Accuracy

The upcoming film, ‘Chhaava’ based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, has sparked a major controversy over a Lezim dance sequence featuring actor Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna. Following complaints by the descendants of the Maratha king and historical experts, the filmmakers have decided to censor the objectionable part to preserve cultural and historical sensitivity.

Backlash Over Historical Inaccuracy

The scene, which depicted Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and Queen Yesubai had danced to a Lezim, was called inaccurate historically. Moreover, prominent voices, Sambhajiraje Chhatrapati and Udayanraje Bhosale, direct descendants of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, called it 'highly objectionable.' The criticism highlighted the importance of adhering to historical accuracy, especially when portraying revered figures like Sambhaji Maharaj.

Director Responds to the Outcry

In the wake of the backlash, Chhaava director Laxman Utekar sought advice from Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray. After the meeting, Utekar made a statement saying the dance sequence of the film would be removed. “We wanted his advice because he is well-read and knowledgeable about history, especially regarding Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj,” Utekar explained. “He gave us valuable suggestions. We had no intention to hurt anyone's sentiments, but if the scene has caused offence, we will remove it. The Lezim dance is not a significant part of the film, so deleting it won’t affect the narrative.” He further stated.

Minister Demands Historical Accuracy

Uday Samant, Maharashtra’s Minister of Marathi Language, confirmed the filmmakers’ decision to delete the scene and said such things were necessary for the film’s smooth release. "If the scene has been deleted, there should be no further objections to the release of the film,” Samant stated.

The minister however said that it's important the film is reviewed by historians and experts to ensure it keeps in mind the legacy of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. “Our position is that this film should not be released without first showing it to experts and knowledgeable people. Anything that will harm the honour of the Maharaj will not be tolerated,” he asserted.

Efforts to Preserve Sambhaji Maharaj’s Legacy

Samant appreciated the effort in putting Sambhaji Maharaj’s story on the big screen but said filmmakers should take utmost care. He stated, “It is a matter of joy that a Hindi film based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the protector of religion and protector of freedom, is being made. However, many have expressed their opinions that there are some objectionable scenes in this film. A further decision will be taken after watching the film; otherwise, this film will not be allowed to be released.”

The filmmakers' decision to excise the controversial scene reflects their commitment to historical accuracy while paying tribute to the legacy of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. The film is still under consideration and will likely be released after a thorough review by historians and experts.
