Chhaava Beats Gadar 2 & Uri, Rakes in ₹712.5 Cr Worldwide to Enter Top 10 Indian Films
Vicky Kaushal’s historical film Chhaava has set a new record at the box office, beating Sunny Deol’s film Gadar 2 to secure the 10th spot among India’s highest-grossing films. The movie has earned ₹530.95 crore domestically, proving its dominance in the industry.
Since its release on February 14, Chhaava has continued to attract audiences to theatres. On its 26th day, it earned ₹5.15 crore, keeping its momentum strong despite a slight drop in weekday collections. The film is expected to gain further traction with the Holi holiday boosting its numbers.
Box Office Reports
Directed by Laxman Utekar, Chhaava has outperformed Gadar 2, which earned ₹525.7 crore in India. The film’s journey began with a massive ₹200 crore collection within its first week, and it has consistently performed well since. Its worldwide earnings have also surpassed ₹712.5 crore.
Vicky Kaushal’s Biggest Hit
With this success, Chhaava has become the highest-grossing film of Vicky Kaushal’s career, overtaking Uri: The Surgical Strike. The actor expressed his gratitude on social media, calling the film “an emotion” rather than just a box office success.
In addition to its box office success, "Chhaava" has sparked controversy due to comments by actress Swara Bhasker. She criticized society for being more outraged by the film's depiction of historical events than by recent real-life tragedies, such as the Maha Kumbh stampede. This led to significant backlash, with many accusing her of trivializing historical suffering. Bhasker later clarified her remarks, stating she respects Chhatrapati Shivaji's legacy and urging people not to misuse past glory to overlook present issues.
About the Film
Chhaava is based on Shivaji Sawant’s Marathi novel and narrates the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. Vicky Kaushal plays the titular role, while Rashmika Mandanna portrays Maharani Yesubai. The cast also includes Akshaye Khanna as Aurangzeb, Diana Penty, and Ashutosh Rana.
The movie's gripping narrative and strong performances have helped it to maintain its box office success. Chhaava, which has been produced by Dinesh Vijan's Maddock Films, has touched the hearts of audiences, thus continuing to show strong performances in theatres.
What Next for Chhaava
With no major competition now in theatres, it appears that Chhaava will keep climbing up the all-time box-office hit charts. Experts from the industry claim it may even break into the top five all-time Indian movies in the next few weeks.
