‘Is This What Bapu Wanted?’ BJP Attacks Opposition After Ruckus Over G-RAM-G Bill in Parliament
The Bharatiya Janata Party successfully passed the Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Bill, 2025 (VB-G RAM G Bill) in the Lok Sabha on 18 December 2025, but not without any commotion.
The opposition leaders protested against the bill and tore its copies. They also regarded the new bill as an insult to Mahatma Gandhi as his name was removed.

Uproar in Lok Sabha Over Renaming of MGNREGA Scheme
The members of the opposition parties protested fiercely in the Lok Sabha, accusing the ruling party of insulting Mahatma Gandhi. Tensions peaked when lawmakers rushed into the House and started tearing copies of the new bill. They argued that removing Mahatma Gandhi's name from this scheme deprecates its historical significance and intent.
Leaders like Priyanka Gandhi Vadra claimed the move reflects personal ambition rather than public welfare. Critics further alleged that shifting 40% of the funding burden to states would eventually kill the program. They fear that financially strained states will struggle to maintain employment guarantees, ultimately hurting the rural poor.
BJP Defends G-RAM-G Bill as a Tribute to Gandhi’s Vision
Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan strongly defended the new bill, asserting it truly realizes Gandhi’s dream of Gram Swaraj. He argued that the previous government only added Bapu’s name in 2009 to gain votes during the general elections.

In response to the criticism, Shivraj Singh Chouhan asked a question: “Would Bapu accept this kind of disgraceful behaviour of the Opposition standing atop desks in Parliament?” He further added, “Ram G ke naam par itni chidh kyu hain? The name ‘VB–G Ram G’ bill simply reflects the objectives which are employment and ajeevika.”
The BJP maintains that the VB-G RAM G Bill enhances the scheme by increasing guaranteed workdays from 100 to 125. They claim the reform rationalizes the system and focuses on creating durable infrastructure, such as water security and rural roads. Leaders suggested that the inclusion of “RAM” in the title signifies a commitment to establishing “Ram Rajya.” They accused the opposition of hypocrisy, noting that past governments also renamed schemes without facing such intense scrutiny or backlash.
