MacBook Pro's 2026 Leap: From Notch to OLED Dynamic Island
California-based tech giant, Apple is reportedly planning to give the MacBook Pro lineup a massive display overhaul by switching from mini-LED then to OLED technology by 2026. This transition is a major evolution in Apple’s display innovation and a number of its other devices are expected to switch to OLEDs in the next several years.
OLED MacBook Pro to Feature Dynamic Island Design
A report by 9To5Mac based on research conducted by Omdia, predicts that Apple will transition the MacBook Pro displays to OLED between 2026 and 2027. The new screens will be based on the hybrid OLED solution, which was introduced in the new M4 iPad series. This Tandem OLED display consists of two OLED panels in which the two LED panels are stacked together, delivering higher brighter levels than the traditional OLED display.
Another noteworthy transition involves Apple deciding to dispense the notch at the top of the MacBook Pro’s screen. The current notch houses FaceID sensors and the webcam. Moreover, further models are expected to incorporate an iPhone-like Dynamic Island arrangement. Although its specific form of execution is still in the nascent phase, it is likely to feature a hole cutout with rounded corners.
Apple iPad Mini and iPad Air to Follow with OLED Displays
Apple’s switch to OLED technology is not limited to the MacBook Pro model. The iPad Mini will go OLED in 2026, and the iPad Air at some stage in 2027. These enhancements mean to increase the illumination, and contrast ratio and reduce power consumption for all Apple’s tablet devices. Euro Mac however makes the argument that, with these advancements, MacBook Air’s OLED transition might not happen until 2028.
Foldable OLED Device to Release in 2028
Apple is also rumoured to be in the works for a foldable device with an OLED screen. This innovative product is expected to be released in 2028 and signals Apple’s continued exploration of new form factors and cutting-edge display technologies.
The shift towards OLED displays is in line with Apple’s trends to improve the performance of the displays across its products. Even with the Tandem OLED technology, it will seek to deliver higher brightness, superior colour quality and improved user experiences.
Apple has yet to comment on these reports, but the suggested timeline suggests a gradual but impactful transition that may revolutionise display technology for laptops, tablets, and foldable notebooks.
