Tim Cook shares outlook for AI, mixed reality, and leadership in WIRED Q&A

Apple’s chief executive officer, Tim Cook, recently spoke to WIRED where he discussed the company’s strides in Artificial Intelligence, smart glasses known as Vision Pro, and plans for its future gadgets. Some key issues were explored including a historical perspective of AI, technology devices, and environmental themes and his opinion on the use of technology.

Apple’s Approach to AI & AGI

Cook agreed with the idea of using AI about making user experiences better but he too stressed on certain ethical implications. When asked about OpenAI's pursuit of artificial general intelligence (AGI), Cook acknowledged the ongoing nature of such discussions, stating: “There's so much extraordinary benefit for humanity. Are there some things you have to have guardrails on? Of course. We're very deeply considerate about things that we do and don't do.”

Cook went on to emphasize that Apple’s essential goal lies with AI not just generating revenue but the changes it brings into people’s lives. He reinforced Apple’s position by describing AI as a ‘core’ technology like multitouch while stressing that AGI is still out of reach.

Vision Pro: A Glimpse of Tomorrow’s Technology

Addressing Vision Pro sales, Cook referred to the device as an “early adopter product” tailored to those embracing cutting-edge technology. Despite mixed reports about sales, Cook expressed optimism with WIRED about the product’s ecosystem growth: “It's an early adopter product, for people who want tomorrow's technology today. Those people are buying it, and the ecosystem is flourishing.”

He also confirmed that Apple sees mixed-reality advancements as a part of a gradual progression in device form factors.

Technologies in Daily Life and Medical Innovation

However, Cook voiced concerns about Smartphone usage, urging users to balance digital engagement with real-world connections. Apple has introduced features like Screen Time and parental controls to promote healthier usage habits: “If you're looking at your phone more than you’re looking in somebody's eyes, that's a problem.”

Cook also spoke of using Artificial Intelligence to study biometric data with devices such as the Apple Watch and AirPods, although he did not make any concrete revelations.

Looking Ahead: Live Keynotes and Leadership

When it comes to live presentations, Cook confessed he misses the traditional kind, despite the efficiency of pre-recorded keynotes. Reflecting on his tenure as CEO, Cook stated he would remain at Apple until it feels time to step down:

“I'll do it until the voice in my head says, 'It's time.' But it's hard to imagine life without Apple.”

However, Cook’s statements on AI advancement, or the potential of mixed reality, are clear: Apple wants to further advance technology and, at the same time, deepen its focus on the customers and its user-first approach.
