Airtel Outage Disrupts Calls and Internet Across India: What We Know So Far
Imagine being on an important call when it suddenly drops due to a network issue. Millions of Airtel users across India faced this problem. Social media erupted with frustrated users sharing their stories about being unable to make calls, send texts, or use data. This began around 3:30 PM IST, when updates started circulating nationwide, and complaints poured in from various cities. Delhi experienced the issues first, followed by Mumbai, Bengaluru, and finally Hyderabad.
Airtel issued several updates, apologizing for the situation and assuring users that their engineers were working to restore service. However, with business interrupted, many users were unable to make emergency calls and felt disconnected from their communication channels. They were left wondering when they would next be able to access Airtel services.
Extent of the Outage: How Big Is It?
Down Detector reported more than 3,600 complaints by 4:32 PM. This is a huge jump from under 15 complaints on a normal day. The outage was not limited to Airtel; users reported problems with Jio and Vodafone-Idea (Vi), but at lower levels.
Services Affected:
- Voice calls (71% of complaints): Users were unable to make or receive calls.
- Mobile internet (26%):Users experienced outages in 4G and 5G data services.
- No signal (18%): Total loss of network connectivity was reported by some users.
Some cities, such as Chandigarh, Ahmedabad, and Chennai, were the worst hit, while users vented their frustration online, especially on X (formerly Twitter).
What the Company Said: Airtel's Response
Outage was acknowledged by the official X handle of Airtel, which had stated:
“The network outage is being reported right now. It is under investigation for the restoration of services at the earliest. We apologize for the inconvenience."

The number of complaints fell below 400 at 6:40 PM, indicating partial service restoration, but many users were still experiencing issues, especially in Delhi-NCR, though Airtel had stated that a "large part" had also been fixed.
When Will Services Be Fully Restored?
Although Airtel has provided no specific timeline, most outages take about 4-6 hours to resolve. Now that complaints have almost gone down, normalcy should prevail with a full restoration by late evening.
The Fragility of India's Telecom Infrastructure
The latest Airtel outage highlights the vulnerability of telecom infrastructure in India. Although the Airtel team is working hard to restore service, this incident raises serious concerns about the reliability of telecommunications - particularly for business and emergency communications. As customers are unable to make or receive calls, they must rely on the tireless efforts of Airtel engineers to restore connectivity.
