An Air India Mumbai-bound flight, AI 887, returned safely to Delhi on Monday, December 22, after encountering a “serious glitch” shortly after takeoff. Operating on a Boeing 777-300ER (VT-ALS), the flight declared a full emergency at 6:40 AM when the right-hand engine reportedly shut down mid-air.

All the passengers and the crew left the vessel without any problems, and the safety measures were applied in a conventional manner.

Technical Details of the Incident

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) reported that the flight crew detected low engine oil pressure in the number two engine while the flaps were being retracted. The pressure fell to zero in no time, and the crew decided promptly to return to Delhi. DGCA sources confirmed that previous maintenance records showed no abnormal oil consumption. Inspection and aircraft repair are currently underway.
