AIIMS Delhi has officially committed to building a massive 3,000-bed rest house for patient families. This move follows a viral video showing the harsh conditions people face on the streets. The Delhi High Court stepped in to demand a solution

On 16 January 2026, AIIMS told the court it had set aside two acres of land for the project. This new facility aims to help thousands of people who currently sleep on freezing pavements while their loved ones receive medical care.

Crisis Management Amid Delhi’s Brutal Cold Wave

For a long time, families have slept outside AIIMS Gate No. 1. Delhi winters are very cold and dangerous. Right now, the hospital only has about 949 beds in its shelters, which is not enough for the 15,000 people who visit every day. AIIMS is now working with an NGO from Ahmedabad to build the new center.

The court also ordered immediate help, so the city will put up 80 temporary night shelters right away. These are insulated tents to keep people warm during the current cold wave, and they will stay until the permanent building is ready. This plan ensures that no one has to sleep on the bare ground this winter.

Who Will Fund and Manage the New 3,000-Bed AIIMS Rest House?

Many people want to know who will pay for this big project. AIIMS is providing the land, but the money will come from different places. The Delhi High Court Bar Association is asking its members to donate funds. This means the building will be a team effort between the government and private donors.

Key details for the future:

  • Low Costs: The goal is to keep prices very low. Families might only pay Rs. 10 to Rs. 25 per day.
  • NGO Help: The partner NGO will run the building to keep it clean and safe.
  • Sanitation: In the next six months, the focus will be on hygiene. The court wants to make sure the toilets and beds are kept in good condition.
  • Space: This project will help clear the crowded sidewalks around the hospital.

This project shows that hospitals must care for families, not just patients. It is hard for a patient to get well if their family is suffering outside. If AIIMS builds this 3,000-bed house successfully, other hospitals in India might do the same. This is a big step toward making healthcare more kind and organized for everyone.
