The Iconic FJ Cruiser Returns as Toyota's Rugged and Modern Baby Land Cruiser for 2026
Toyota has officially announced the debut of the FJ Cruiser, dubbed the "Baby Land Cruiser." The vehicle is largely inspired by the Compact Cruiser EV concept and will be equipped with the latest off-roading features like a retro-modern design, a ladder-frame chassis, and a 2.7L petrol engine. Expected to launch next year, this compact vehicle is equipped with a 4x4 transmission for smooth off-road travel.
About the Toyota FJ Cruiser
The debut of the highly anticipated 'baby Land Cruiser' model from Toyota will reintroduce the FJ Cruiser. The unveiling is a key highlight expected at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show. Two years ago, Toyota first hinted at its vision to expand the Land Cruiser nameplate to include various models to attract a broader customer base. The company indirectly implied the development of this smaller Land Cruiser.
The four-wheeler is now revealed as the next FJ Cruiser, presented in a state that is either production-ready or very close to it. The name FJ Cruiser holds considerable significance for the manufacturer.
The automobile’s debut marks the return of this iconic designation, which was retired a few years ago following a substantial seventeen-year production run. The company plans to release more variations deriving from the Land Cruiser name in the future to keep pace with evolving consumer needs.
Special Features & Specs of FJ Cruiser
The design is expected to be a primary attraction for the 2026 FJ Cruiser, having been inspired by the Toyota Compact Cruiser EV Concept. Similar to the Land Cruiser 250, the 2026 FJ Cruiser will have two distinct front fascias. Depending on the trim level, one fascia will feature circular headlamps, and the other rectangular.
Its appealing exterior elements include sculpted body panels, prominent and flared rectangular wheel arches, a bold stance, robust-looking bumpers, substantial C-pillars, a spare wheel mounted on the tailgate, and visually appealing LED taillights. Toyota is also emphasizing more on customization this time, offering easily removable bumpers and optional accessories like snorkels and cargo panels.
A 4-cylinder petrol engine powers the 2026 Toyota FJ Cruiser, generating a peak power of 161 bhp and maximum torque of approximately 245 Nm. This engine is coupled with a 6-speed automatic transmission and a 4X4 transfer case. The arrangement is ideal for proper off-roading. The launch is scheduled for the middle of next year in Japan, with other markets expected to follow shortly thereafter.
