Tragedy struck during this year's Diwali celebrations when at least 14 children in Madhya Pradesh lost their vision after they played with locally made "carbide guns," a deadly firework device that has become popularised by social media.

Carbide Guns Cause Severe Injuries Nationwide

The accidents have been reported in several districts, including Bhopal, Vidisha, Gwalior, and Indore. In Bhopal alone, over 60 people, primarily children ranging from the age of 8 to 14, have been hospitalized after being injured by these devices.

The Chief Medical Health Officer of Bhopal, Manish Sharma, verified that, although there is no immediate danger to their lives, some victims have lost their eyesight permanently, while others have suffered facial burns.

The carbide guns are improvised guns made of PVC or metal tubes with calcium carbide, water, and even stones. When lit, they create a deafening explosion, which can cause serious injuries, primarily to the eyes.

The improvised weapons have been illegally sold in markets, even though the government banned them on October 18. Several people have been arrested for engaging in the sale of dangerous weapons.

Viral Trend Sparks Dangerous Carbide Gun Challenge

The popularity of carbide guns has been boosted by viral videos on social media platforms such as Instagram and YouTube, where users display the devices as part of the ‘Firecracker Gun Challenge.’

This trend has led to mass imitation among children and youths, resulting in numerous accidents. Experts note that the chemical reactions in such devices can lead to irreversible eye damage as well as damage to other parts of the body.

Could Social Media Trends Endanger Children This Diwali?

As a reaction to the crisis, the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister has directed action against the carbide gun manufacturers and sellers. Police are making raids and have arrested perpetrators of the illegal business. Medical personnel are urging people to avoid using such do-it-yourself devices and to report any sightings to the authorities.

The accident brings to light the risks of uncontrolled firecrackers and the impact of social media trends on young people. Guardians and parents are urged to educate children on the dangers of such devices and promote safe and responsible festive practice during celebrations.
