Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s ad promotes online poker, leading to accusations of disrespecting Maharashtra Police
Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui is entangled in controversy over his appearance in a recent advertisement for an online gaming platform. The ad, which features him dressed as a police officer promoting poker, has sparked a backlash from the Hindu Janjagruti Samiti, a Hindu organisation. The group claims the ad disrespects the Maharashtra Police and tarnishes their image, demanding legal action against both Siddiqui and Ankur Singh, the owner of Big Cash Poker. The organisation argues that using police imagery to promote gambling sends a harmful message and undermines public trust in law enforcement.
The advertisement depicts the actor in a police uniform, encouraging people to play poker. This portrayal has sparked outrage from the Hindu Janjagruti Samiti, who claims the depiction is disrespectful to law enforcement. The organisation argues that using a police officer's image in the context of promoting gambling could undermine the public's trust in the Maharashtra Police.
Social Campaign Demands Legal Action
As part of their Surajya Abhiyan campaign, the organisation has formally requested the Mumbai Police Commissioner and the Director General of Police (DGP) of Maharashtra to take action. The group insists that the advertisement violates the principles outlined in the Maharashtra Police Act, 1951, and the Maharashtra Civil Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1979.
Abhishek Murukate, the state coordinator of Surajya Abhiyan, highlighted that the advertisement conveys a misleading message, suggesting that online gambling offers skills comparable to the training received by police officers. He criticised the fact that no police officials have acted against the ad and expressed disappointment that a citizen group had to raise the issue instead. Murukate urged the state’s Home Minister to intervene, warning that the lack of action might encourage similar unethical advertisements in the future.
“The same police department that registers cases against gamblers is now being misrepresented through this commercial,” said Murukate in his letter. “This is damaging and unacceptable. We expect swift action to prevent further misuse of police uniforms in advertisements.”
Awaiting Response from Nawazuddin
As of now, Nawazuddin Siddiqui has not issued any statement in response to the controversy. The actor, known for his unconventional roles and remarkable performances, is no stranger to public scrutiny. However, his portrayal of a police officer in this ad has triggered a significant backlash, putting him in an awkward position.
Current Work Done by Nawazuddin
Some controversy aside, Nawazuddin Siddiqui has not experienced a dull moment in terms of the professional front. He was last seen in the movie "Haddi" that released on the OTT platform Zee5. Another recent release, "Rautu Ka Raaz" also went on air on Zee5 on June 28. Directed by Anand Surapur, the mystery drama ensemble features Atul Tiwari, Rajesh Kumar, and Narayani Shastri.
Earlier Nawazuddin Siddiqui stated that he has faced criticism for his unusual looks. Nawazuddin Siddiqui called himself "the ugliest actor in Bollywood." Yet, he has gained great respect because of his talent and hard work.
Whether Nawazuddin Siddiqui or Big Cash Poker will have anything to say in this regard now only time will say. The matter is presently with the authorities, and one is waiting for action from the Mumbai Police and the Maharashtra DGP on this matter.
