Mozilla launches AI-powered startup called Mozilla.ai to build a trustworthy AI ecosystem

Mozilla, the company behind the Firefox browser, launched an artificial intelligence-focused startup called Mozilla.ai to create an independent, trustworthy, open-source AI ecosystem. Mozilla Corp. announced that it will invest US$30 million in Mozilla.ai on developing “trustworthy” artificial intelligence.

“The vision for Mozilla.ai is to make it easy to develop trustworthy AI products,” Mark Surman, Mozilla’s executive president, and a Mozilla.ai board member, wrote in a blog post. Mozilla’s “Responsible AI Challenge,” look for people working in this field among developers, engineers, and community members. The challenge’s goal is to find people who are working to make AI more trustworthy and safer, as well as to invest in projects that are ethical and holistic. After Google’s Bard and Microsoft’s Bing, Mozilla’s Mozilla.ai has been changing the face of the internet.

Mozilla Firefox is one of the world's leading browsers, with over 3.1 percent of the market share and over 362 million users worldwide. With this move, the company hopes to expand its user base. The new company Mozilla.ai will initially focus on developing tools that make generative AI safer and more transparent, without misleading or jeopardizing the company’s success. This drives the innovations required to change the course of future AI development in a direction that ensures future AI is safe for everyone to use. The new startup will begin by developing tools that make generative AI more transparent and will aid in the development of more “people-centric” recommendation systems that will not misinform or undermine user well-being. The company stated that it will announce additional initiatives, partners, and events in which people can participate later this year. Mozilla completed the acquisition of the US-based virtual spaces and events start-up Active Replica in December of last year to strengthen its metaverse strategy. Mozilla acquired the company as it expands Hubs, the company’s virtual reality (VR) collaboration platform.
