Microsoft and Amazon's Bold Investment Initiatives: Shaping Tomorrow's Tech Landscape
Microsoft announced on Sunday that it will invest 4 billion euros in data center development in France, joining its U.S. counterparts. Corporate giant Amazon in its commitment to the country’s technology infrastructure.
The announcements were made on the eve of the seventh Choose France Conference, which aims to attract foreign investors to the country. Macron will hold it at the Versailles Château near Paris.
Microsoft chairman Brad Smith told AFP the move to strengthen its artificial intelligence and cloud computing infrastructure which was the tech giant's biggest investment in France since its arrival 41 years ago.
France's "longstanding commitment to carbon-free energy markets", and its position as an "important leader" in Europe explained the decision, Smith said. New data centers will be built in eastern France, and existing sites in the Paris region and southern Marseille will be expanded.
French President Emmanuel Macron's office said earlier on Tuesday that Amazon will invest more than 1.2 billion euros in France, creating more than 3,000 jobs.
The statement said the funding will help develop Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud infrastructure, specifically generative artificial intelligence, and logistics infrastructure for its parcel delivery service.
Amazon did not respond to AFP's comments on Saturday and said today it declined to comment ahead of what is likely to be an announcement at the event.
