Meta is working on a standalone text-based social network app code-named P92 that allows users to log in

Meta is developing a decentralized text-based social network app to compete with Mastodon, and develop as an alternative app to Twitter. The company confirmed in a statement to multiple media outlets that it is investigating a “standalone decentralized social network” for sharing text-based content.

A Meta spokesperson said, “We believe there’s an opportunity for a separate space where creators and public figures can share timely updates about their interests.” The app, codenamed P92, will allow users to log in using their Instagram credentials. The P92 is currently in development but did not specify when the app will be available. The move is interpreted as Meta attempting to capitalize on the growing demand for an alternative to Twitter following Elon Musk’s takeover of the social media platform. Instagram CEO, Adam Mosseri will reportedly oversee the project.

“We’re exploring a standalone decentralized social network for sharing text updates. “We believe there is a need for a separate space where creators and public figures can share timely updates about their interests,” said a Meta spokesperson. The free and open-source platform received over 70,000 sign-ups the day after the Twitter deal was completed. According to reports, Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri will be in charge of the project. However, the decision to use Instagram credentials to log into P92 may turn off some users who do not want to give their data to yet another Meta-owned app. The move by Meta is interpreted as an attempt to create a Twitter alternative or a Mastodon competitor. After Elon Musk took over Twitter, the latter gained popularity. Meta’s new app will also support ActivityPub, making it easier to connect with other instances such as Mastodon. Tumblr, Flipboard, and Flickr are among the other tools that have been implemented.
