Crew Shortage and Tech Glitches Behind IndiGo Cancelling Over 70 Flights in India
IndiGo flights have been cancelled at several airports as the airline struggled to get crew for operating flights following the implementation of the second phase of the FDTL norms. It is reported that more than 70 flights were either delayed or cancelled at Mumbai and Bengaluru airports on Wednesday, causing chaos among passengers.
Crew Shortages and New FDTL Norms
IndiGo has cancelled numerous flights across India, primarily on account of an acute crew shortage. One of the primary reasons for this crew shortage was the implementation of the second phase of the Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) norms.
The new rules, effective from 1 November, impose stricter limits on crew work hours. They include increasing weekly rest periods to 48 hours for pilots and restricting night landings. The FDTL norms now permit only two night landings per crew, a sharp reduction from the previous limit of six.
This regulation, along with the extended night duty hours, has put certain constraints on the airline's operations. The scheduling strain has made it difficult for IndiGo to manage its network of flights.
A source told PTI that “IndiGo has been facing acute crew shortage since the implementation of the second phase of the FDTL norms, leading to cancellations and huge delays in its operations across the airports.”
They further added, “The situation turned bad on Tuesday for the airline and the shortage turned worse on Wednesday with scores of flights cancelled and delayed from across airports in the country.”
Passenger Outcry and the Airline's Official Response
The widespread flight disruptions have triggered significant passenger frustration and a social media outcry. Stranded travelers reported poor communication and a lack of assistance from the airline's ground staff.
Other flyers complained about repeated delays over the previous week, often citing only "operational reasons" for the disruptions. Additionally, they alleged that the customer service team was unreachable at times to provide clarification.
In response, an IndiGo spokesperson acknowledged the issues, stating, "We have had several unavoidable flight delays and some cancellations in the past few days due to various reasons including technology issues, airport congestion, and operational requirements."
The airline further assured customers that its teams were "working diligently" to normalize operations promptly. IndiGo is offering affected passengers alternate flight options or full refunds, as applicable to their circumstances.
