iPhone maker Apple approves ChatGPT-powered app after content moderation assurances
As OpenAI’s ChatGPT has taken the world by storm, iPhone maker Apple has reportedly entered the game as well. The report says, Apple approved a ChatGPT-powered app after receiving assurances from its developer about content moderation, as concerns grow about ChatGPT going crazy and even generating inappropriate content for some users.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the iPhone maker gave this approval after the app’s developer provided assurances about its content moderation capabilities. Apple approved the ‘BlueMail’ app after its developer assured them that it has content moderation tools. Apple scrutinized whether a feature in the software that uses AI-powered language tools “could generate inappropriate content for children”. According to Ben Volach, co-founder of app developer Blix Inc., “its update includes content moderation,” which he told Apple. “The company should make public any new policies regarding the use of ChatGPT or other similar AI systems in apps,” he suggested.
According to the report, the BlueMail app is still available for users aged 4 and up as there were doubts about whether a feature in the software uses AI-powered language tools that could generate inappropriate content for children. Following that, Blix informed Apple about the inclusion of content moderation in its email app update and suggested that Apple make public its policies regarding the use of ChatGPT on software, according to the Wall Street Journal. The BlueMail update was approved with no changes with the app still available to users aged 4 and up. BlueMail now includes a new feature powered by ChatGPT. According to the Wall Street Journal, the AI system will answer questions or write short essays to help automate the writing of emails for users based on the contents of prior emails and calendar events.
The recent rejection of the ChatGPT-powered update on BlueMail brought the issue of AI dominance to the forefront once more. It emphasized the growing concerns about language-generating AI tools around the world. But before approving an app for the App Store, Apple curates and reviews it. However, there have been some reservations about using ChatGPT. Researchers have been grappling with the ethical issues surrounding its use since its release because much of its output can be difficult to distinguish from the human-written text.
