Fragile Normal Life’: PV Sindhu Recounts Near-Miss With Dubai Airport Blast
Indian badminton legend PV Sindhu has safely returned to Bengaluru after surviving a terrifying ordeal in Dubai that forced her withdrawal from the 2026 All England Open. The two-time Olympic medalist was caught in the crossfire of escalating Middle East tensions on 28 February, when retaliatory strikes shut down regional airspace.
Stranded at Dubai International Airport during active missile interceptions, Sindhu described the experience as a "nightmare" that left her team shaken but physically unharmed.
A Narrow Escape at Dubai Airport
The trouble started shortly after Sindhu landed for a layover. She was on her way to Birmingham. Within 15 minutes, officials stopped all flights as a loud explosion took place close to the airport. Sindhu said her coach was nearly caught in the blast, and he had to run to find a safe place.
According to a report by Hindustan Times: “My coach was still at the airport and then we got a call from him saying there was a big sound... literally 100 metres away... there was a lot of smoke and they had to run outside. The airport authorities arranged transport, took them out and put them in a different hotel. It was terrifying.”
Sindhu stayed in a hotel for three days. She heard loud noises five or six times every day. Her phone received many emergency alerts, which advised travelers to stay away from windows.
How Regional Unrest Redraws the Sporting Map
Cricket teams and other athletes have stopped their trips to the region. Sindhu lost important ranking points as she missed her tournament. Usually, players pay a fine for withdrawing, but the Badminton World Federation dropped the fine this time as the war was a special case.
PV Sindhu is safe, but this event is a wake-up call. Sports groups cannot ignore regional conflicts anymore. Travel paths for athletes are now at risk. In the future, sports leaders must have better safety plans. The sports world must learn to adapt to these new global challenges.
