The Indian government is planning to draft a new law on artificial intelligence to protect the rights of journalists and content creators, Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnav said. The Bill could be a stand-alone bill or part of the forthcoming Digital India Act, which would build on the Information Technology Act of 2000. The minister stressed the need to respect creativity in terms of intellectual property and economic impact emphasize.
He also argued that the statutory form of legislation would be more effective than a self-regulatory body. This follows global demands to protect the rights of manufacturers, with numerous lawsuits being filed against large tech companies for using copyrighted material without payment.
In India, publishers have been calling for reforms in IT laws to ensure fair royalties for content used by AI models. The Digital News Publishers Association (DNPA), which represents 17 of the nation’s leading media outlets, has demanded protection from AI models that could infringe copyright.
According to a current government adviser, AI models that are easy to test for unreliable AI should be open to the general public only if they are labeled according to risk. The advisory, published in mid-March, indicates that it is a label should make the “possible inherent fallibility or unreliability of the output generated” clear to the user.
