Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to use Bing chat in Microsoft Edge Browser in 2023

You've most likely heard about the new Bing Chat by now. In February 2023, Microsoft began rolling out this new experience, which uses OpenAI GPT-4 large language model to allow users to talk to Bing in natural human language and have it respond in kind. It's a glimpse into what artificial intelligence can do in the future, and as such, it's worth a shot.

To use the Bing chat experience, you must use the Microsoft Edge browser, as expected. You might not like it at first, but Edge is a very capable browser these days, and it's built on the Chromium engine, so it should perform similarly to Google Chrome. You must also register for the Bing preview. There was once a waitlist, but you can now simply go to this website and sign in with your Microsoft Live account via the Edge browser. You can then begin using it.

How to Use Bing Chat in the Discover panel of Microsoft Edge

The Discover panel, which Microsoft added to the browser alongside Bing's launch, is the simplest way to access Bing in Microsoft Edge. To begin, follow these steps:

1. Start Microsoft Edge on your computer.

2. In the top-right corner, just below the window controls, click the Bing button.

3. The chat interface will appear immediately. Depending on what you want to ask, you can choose a more creative, balanced, or precise tone. If you want to write some longer text that feels more nuanced, a more creative tone may be helpful, whereas a precise tone may be better if you want concrete information about something.

4. After you've chosen a tone, you can use the text box at the bottom to ask Bing anything.

5. After a few turns, Bing will automatically restart the conversation. If you want to start over, you can click the New Topic button next to the text box. This allows Bing to stay focused on a specific topic.

While the Discover panel is the most convenient way to use Bing, you can also access it via the Bing website. Simply go to the Bing homepage and click the Chat link near the top. The experience will be nearly identical, but with more room for the chat UI.

How to Make Use of Bing Compose Tool

When you open the Discover tab in Microsoft Edge, you may notice another tab called Compose for Bing. This is an experience in which you can ask Bing to write a test for you on any topic you want, with various length and formatting options.

1. At the top of the Discover panel, click the Compose button.

2. Enter a topic for Bing to write about in the first box.

3. Choose a tone for the message that is appropriate for the context. You have the option of selecting Professional, Casual, Enthusiastic, Informational, or Funny.

4. Select a text formatting style. In general, a paragraph will result in a longer text, as will a blog post, though the latter will have a more informal tone. If you want something formatted for that scenario, choose Email, and the Ideas option will give you a list of bullet points.

5. Select the overall length to further specify the length of the text.

6. To create a message that meets your criteria, click Generate draught.

7. You can select and copy the text, or if you have a page open, use the Add to site button to insert the text directly.

The new Bing chat feature inside Edge has a lot of potential, and given how new it is, there will most likely be a lot of changes in the coming months.
