Josh Wardle, a Brooklyn-based programmer, developed the puzzle game Wordle, which challenges players to predict a five-letter word in six tries. Wordle, which was first made for his puzzle-loving partner, has become very famous. Compared to the 90 people who completed it on November 1, a few million people play it on the weekends.

The game’s popularity exploded in late 2021, largely due to the ability to easily share results with emoji squares on social media.

Wordle was inspired by older word games like “Jotto” and the game show “Lingo.”
