Ah, the weekend is almost here! Unwind and give your brain a little treat. Wordle is the daily competition: a witty five-letter word puzzle that has caught the fancy of millions. You are allowed six guesses, and with every guess, you get color-coded feedback as clues. Quick, gratifying, and mentally stimulating, this game has become a daily ritual for many eager people, marking the perfect end to a week.

Fun Facts About Wordle (and its Words!)

A Love Story Origin: Wordle was developed by Welsh software engineer Josh Wardle as a personal gift to his partner, Palak Shah, given her love for word games.

The Name's a Pun: The game's title, ‘Wordle,’ is a pun with reference to the creator's last name, Wardle.

Designed for Scarcity: Wardle designed it to be ‘one puzzle per day’ to build up an eagerness and not make it a time sink.

Not an App (At least Not Initially): The original Wordle imposed itself as web-only at the time of its viral fame. Many copycat apps appeared.

NYT Acquisition: The New York Times acquired Wordle in early 2022 for an undisclosed sum said to be in ‘low-seven figures,’ whereas Wardle never thought of capitalizing on it in the beginning.

Global Craze: At the height of its global fame, the daily active user count reached several tens of millions.

Best Starting Word: Whereas lots of people like to argue over what the best first word is, statistical analyses tend to favor CRANE, SLATE, and TRACE in maximizing information gained from a guess.

How to Play Wordle

Wordle is a web-based word puzzle game played globally. It was designed and developed by Welsh engineer Josh Wardle. In the game, you need to discover a five-letter word for the day within six chances. There are three color codes, i.e., green, yellow, and gray, for you to comprehend the game flow.

Letter Strategy

It starts with the words containing the most common letters in English. These letters 'E', 'A', 'R', 'I', 'O', 'T', 'L', 'S', and 'N'—should be given priority. Ideally, your first guess should be a word made up of distinct, highly frequent letters so as to maximize your early hits on letters and their positions and consequently rapidly narrow down the possibilities.

Vowels and Consonant Strategy

Strive for an equally good balance. Ideally, your first guesses should be a concoction of 2-3 vowels and 2-3 common consonants. Helping you fortuitously reveal vowel positions while putting to the test the frequencies of common consonants will grant you blanket coverage in quickly ruling out or confirming some likely letters for later guesses.
