Can Samsung Keep Up in the QD-OLED Revolution

The Samsung QD-OLED TV is a new television technology built by Samsung by blending the Quantum Dot (QD) technology and Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) technology to provide superior picture quality with the mixture of the two technologies.

This technology minimises light reflection to provide the best image quality even in bright viewing conditions, regardless of location and environment.

Samsung Competing in the Display Space with its QD-OLED Technology

Samsung’s position in the QD-OLED market is very strong because it develops quantum dot diodes that last for almost 1 million hours. The brand’s QD technology uses a front light emitting mechanism to make the display thinner and lighter than the LCDs. Also, Samsung has its own dedicated quantum dot display manufacturing unit to produce the QD-OLED display.

On the contrary, LG, Sony and other companies have also been giving strong competition with its dominance in the OLED. While Samsung has improved QD-OLED brightness, LG has WRGB aka WOLED panels for new levels of peak brightness by closing the gaps. Samsung has been competing with its QD-OLED technology and has already invested $10 billion and has mentioned this quantum dot display technology as an interim technology for larger-sized panels and they are considering MicroLED as its vision in future. Samsung has released its first QD-OLED TV along with Sony. Later S90D/S90DD QD-OLED model was released in 2024 and is expected to launch an 83-inch QD-OLED TV in 2025. Despite the benefits of the QD-OLED for amazing colour performance, rich contrast, optimized blue light exposure, and comfortable viewing experience, the LG WRGB panels have been competing shoulder to shoulder and with the development of 8.6-Gen AMOLED production lines, making the WRGB OLED panels cheaper. However, Samsung is also making improvements to its technology to make the QD-OLED panels cheaper by further research and development.

Conclusion

Samsung’s QD-OLED technology has made significant developments in picture quality with the blend of Quantum Dot and OLED features. While Samsung holds a significant advantage in the market with its advanced technology, manufacturing unit and investment, it still faces fierce competition from other brands like LG, Sony, TCL, and others with their OLED advancements such as WRGB panels. With technologies continuing to evolve daily, Samsung is also evolving its technology to cut down its costs and expand its QD-OLED lineups to maintain its monopoly and long-term success in the field of display.
