EU and Japan share the same views on AI, opening the door to global tech cooperation official reports

A top official stated on Monday that the European Union finds "convergence" with Japan in their approaches to generative artificial intelligence. Vera Jourova, vice president of the European Commission for Values and Transparency, told Reuters: "I see a lot of convergence in how we look at AI and generative AI."

According to Reuters, Japan is looking at more lenient regulations than the EU to spur economic growth, while the EU is at the forefront of regulating new technologies with its tough AI Act. In areas like artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and chips all of which are deemed crucial for economic security the EU and Japan are advancing their cooperation.

"I see a lot of convergence in how we look at AI and generative AI," Vera Jourova, vice president for values and transparency at the European Commission, stated in an interview with Reuters. Reuters noted that while Japan is looking at more lenient regulations than the EU to spur economic growth, the EU is at the forefront of regulating developing technologies with its tough AI Act.

"I was recently in China and it's a different thing. I could discuss with our Japanese partners because we do not have to explain to each other basic, basic things," Jourova spoke outside a conference on internet governance in Kyoto.

The Group of Seven industrial goliaths is considering legislation for generative AI, a technology that is evoking both excitement and fear, under a process established in Hiroshima. Although Jourova noted that a framework for AI conversations is now under discussion, a code of conduct for companies utilizing AI must yet be created.
